Percent change vs percentage points
These are different: if something goes from 40% to 50%, the change is 10 percentage points but a 25% increase (10/40 = 25%). Politicians often use percentage points when it sounds better and percent change when that sounds better. Know which is which.
Reverse percentage
If a price after 20% VAT is $120, what was the pre-tax price? Not $120 × 0.80 = $96 (that would remove 20% of the post-tax price). The correct calculation: $120 / 1.20 = $100. This is the reverse percentage and a common source of mistakes.
Frequently asked questions
What is 15% of 200?
15% × 200 = 30. Or: move the decimal two places (200 × 0.15 = 30).
How do I calculate a percentage increase?
((New − Old) / Old) × 100. From 80 to 100: ((100−80)/80)×100 = 25% increase.
How do I remove VAT from a price?
Divide the inclusive price by (1 + VAT rate). Price with 20% VAT: $120 / 1.20 = $100 pre-tax.
What is the difference between markup and margin in percentage terms?
Markup % = (profit / cost) × 100. Margin % = (profit / selling price) × 100. A 50% markup gives a 33.3% margin.
