Total Relocation Cost Estimator

Add up flights, visas, shipping and temporary housing to see the total upfront cash a move abroad will take.

Why a one-time total, not a monthly budget

This adds up the upfront, one-time costs of the move itself — the flight, the paperwork, getting your belongings there, and a place to stay until you have permanent housing. It's the cash you need before your new life abroad even starts, separate from the ongoing monthly costs of living there.

Use the buffer honestly

International moves almost always turn up costs nobody budgeted for. A 10-20% miscellaneous buffer on top of your known costs is a simple way to avoid being caught short — raise it if your move involves pets, a vehicle, or a country with unpredictable import rules.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include ongoing costs after I move, like rent?

No — this tool totals the one-time, upfront costs of the move itself (travel, visas, shipping, and temporary housing while you find a permanent place). Ongoing costs like rent, groceries and utilities in your new city aren't included here; use the cost-of-living salary equivalence calculator for those.

Why include a miscellaneous buffer percentage?

International moves reliably turn up costs that are easy to forget until you're already paying them — extra baggage fees, document translation and notarization, pet relocation, short-term storage, replacing items that didn't survive shipping. A buffer of 10-20% on top of your known costs is a common rule of thumb for a more realistic total.

What counts as "temporary housing" here?

Any lodging you pay for before you sign a permanent lease or move into permanent housing — a hotel, a short-term furnished rental, or a few weeks with a relocation service. Once you have permanent housing figures, use the upfront housing cost calculator for the security deposit and move-in costs on that lease.

How accurate are these numbers likely to be?

This is a planning estimate, not a quote. Actual visa fees, shipping rates and temporary housing costs vary a great deal by country, distance and season — get real quotes from movers and check official visa fee schedules before you commit to a budget.
