Smart Lock Battery Life Estimator
Estimate how many months a set of batteries will realistically last in your smart lock, based on your household's actual daily usage.
Why the estimate is lower than the rated cycle count
Manufacturer cycle ratings are usually measured under ideal lab conditions with minimal wireless activity. This tool reduces the rated cycle count by your connectivity overhead percentage before dividing by daily usage, giving a more realistic real-world estimate of how long a set of batteries will actually last.
Set a reminder before the estimate runs out
Most smart locks send a low-battery alert through their app well before they stop working, but it is worth keeping spare batteries on hand a few weeks before the estimated replacement date — especially for a front door lock.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as one "cycle"?
Most manufacturers rate a cycle as one full motor movement — typically one lock or one unlock action. A single person coming home and locking the door behind them usually accounts for two cycles: unlock, then lock.
Why does connectivity overhead reduce the estimate?
A lock with Bluetooth or Wi-Fi connectivity spends some battery power maintaining its wireless connection, responding to app status checks and syncing activity logs, even when nobody is turning the deadbolt. This background drain is on top of the mechanical cycles and is not usually included in a manufacturer's headline cycle rating.
How should I estimate daily cycles for my household?
Count roughly two cycles per person per trip in or out the door (one unlock, one lock), then add extra cycles for guests, deliveries, pet doors or family members with separate schedules. A busy family of four with kids coming and going can easily reach 10–15 cycles a day.
Do rechargeable batteries change this estimate?
The cycle math is the same, but the practical impact is different — a rechargeable battery pack just needs recharging rather than replacing, so a shorter estimated life is a smaller inconvenience than it would be with disposable batteries.
