Luggage Weight & Overweight Fee Calculator
See how many kilograms over the limit your bag is, and what the airline is likely to charge you for it.
Weigh your bag before you weigh your options
A bathroom scale, a luggage scale, or lifting your bag against a bathroom scale while holding it are all reliable ways to get your actual packed weight in kilograms before you leave for the airport — it's much cheaper to shift 2kg into a carry-on at home than to repack at the check-in counter.
How the tiered fee estimate works
The first 5kg over your limit are charged at the rate you enter; anything beyond that is estimated at 1.5× that rate, mirroring how many airlines step up their overweight fee once a bag is significantly over. Treat the total as a planning estimate, not a quote.
Frequently asked questions
How is the overweight fee calculated?
The calculator first finds how many kilograms your bag is over the airline's stated limit, then applies the per-kilogram fee you enter. Many airlines charge a higher rate once you're more than about 5kg over, so a steeper rate is applied automatically to any kilograms beyond that threshold.
Why do airlines charge more per kg once you're further over?
Most airlines use tiered overweight bands rather than one flat per-kg rate — the first few kilograms over cost less per kg than bags that are significantly overweight, partly to discourage very heavy single bags. This tool models that with a simple two-tier estimate.
What should I remove to avoid the fee?
Shoes, toiletry bottles and books are usually the heaviest items relative to their size. Moving one or two dense items into a carry-on bag (if it has room under its own limit) or wearing a heavy jacket instead of packing it are usually the fastest ways to shed a kilogram or two.
Are these fee estimates exact?
No — overweight fees vary a lot by airline, route and fare class, and this uses a generic two-tier model as an estimate. Always check the exact per-kilogram or per-band fee on your airline's own baggage page before you travel.
